The Ultimate Gorilla Trekking Experience in Rwanda: Our Journey Into the Wild

Updated: Mar 2

Rwanda, the Land of a Thousand Hills, is a place of breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and one of the most incredible wildlife encounters on Earth—gorilla trekking. Nestled within the misty mountains of Volcanoes National Park, this adventure gave us an unparalleled opportunity to observe the majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Having had the privilege of experiencing this once-in-a-lifetime journey firsthand, we can confidently say that no words truly capture the magic of locking eyes with a silverback just feet away.

The Journey Begins

After the long flight, we decided to spend the night in Kigali to rest before the trek, though we could have gone straight to the mountain region. Since we stayed in Kigali our first night, our adventure started at 3 AM in the vibrant city. We had to be at Volcanoes National Park by 7 AM, so we set off early. Along the way, we passed through local villages and lush tea plantations, the darkness only occasionally interrupted by the glow of roadside lights.

The excitement built as we gathered with fellow trekkers for a briefing at the park headquarters. The experienced guides and park rangers provided essential insights on gorilla behavior, trekking etiquette, and conservation efforts that protect these endangered primates. After being assigned to a small group, our journey into the dense jungle began.

Each trek varies in difficulty and duration, with some groups encountering gorillas within an hour and others hiking for several hours through rugged terrain. Our trek was challenging but rewarding, with misty canopies overhead, the calls of exotic birds, and the occasional sighting of chameleon felt alive, teeming with nature’s wonders at every step.

A Moment That Changed Everything

Then, suddenly, a young 4-year-old gorilla charged at us. At first, we thought he was being aggressive, but we soon figured he wanted us to play with him. Our hearts pounded as we looked for the rest of the family. Peering through the foliage, we saw the rest of the gorilla family—a powerful silverback, calm and unbothered by the visitors, playful juveniles tumbling in the grass, and a mother cradling her infant. Time seemed to stand still as we watched these gentle giants go about their daily lives, completely at ease in our presence.

Observing their human-like gestures and deep, soulful eyes created an indescribable connection. It was a humbling but amazing experience. The magical hour spent with them passed too quickly, and soon, it was time to bid farewell and begin the trek back.

There are only 25 gorilla families in the mountain range, and only 15 of them can be trekked. The rest are reserved exclusively for research purposes.

Reflections and Lasting Memories

Gorilla trekking wasn’t just an adventure—it was a transformative encounter that left a profound impact on us. The conservation efforts behind these encounters are a testament to Rwanda’s commitment to protecting its natural treasures while offering travelers a truly immersive and ethical wildlife experience.

Tips for an Unforgettable Trek

  • Book your permit in advance: Permits are limited and sell out quickly, so securing yours early is essential.

  • Dress appropriately: Sturdy hiking boots, long-sleeved shirts, and waterproof gear are must-haves.

  • Hire a porter: Not only did this ease our trek, but it also supported the local community.

  • Respect the gorillas: Maintain a safe distance and follow the guidance of your ranger.

  • Embrace the challenge: The trek can be strenuous, but the reward is beyond worth it.

Final Thoughts

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is more than just a bucket-list adventure—it’s an emotional, awe-inspiring experience that fosters a deep appreciation for wildlife and conservation. If you’re seeking a journey that combines adventure, culture, and raw, untamed beauty, look no further than the misty mountains of Rwanda. It’s an experience that will forever change the way we see the world.
